Are you overweight?In this section, we will look at common conditions that afflict those that are overweight as well as the best ways to reach your health target weight.

Why is a healthy weight so important?


If you find that your BMI or waist measurement is above the recommended range (see What's Healthy) you have a higher risk of serious medical conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes. Joint problems and back pain are also common, and you may find that you have difficulty sleeping as well as catching your breath at times.


As you gain weight, these problems can become more serious. But when you lose the additional weight, many of the problems can be eliminated.

Losing weight


Losing weight is as simple as eating less and exercising more. You can start by making small changes in your eating, rather than trying the next fad diet diet. While you will lose weight more slowly, it tends to be permanent instead of short-lived.

In general, physicians recommend that you should lose no more than 2lbs each week, on average.

Even if you don’t lose weight one week, that doesn’t mean you should stop trying


Realize that there will be weeks when you lose more weight. So long as your overall weight decreases over time, there's no need to think that you’re not succeeding. Your weight may stay the same for a week or two, but that’s okay. Just watch the foods you are eating and make the effort to exercise a bit more.

If you’re able to lose just five percent of your body weight in three months, you’re off to a great start. Even ten percent in six months or a year is a wonderful accomplishment. Reward yourself – maybe going to the local spa, or buying that form fitting new outfit a new item of clothing can mark your newfound success.
