How common are eating disorders?

Eating disorders consist of a variety of problems in which people have developed abnormal ways of thinking about food, issues with controlling their appetite, and overall unhealthy eating habits that hinder normal functioning. Obesity is actually the most common product of disordered eating, affecting one in ten people.

Obesity is the number one form of disordered eating

Binge eating and purging, also know as bulimia nervosa, is another common eating disorder, affecting about eight percent of women. In comparison to anorexia, which affects about three percent of women, bulimia nervosa is almost twice as prevalent. It is generally seen that fewer men are affected than women, though a new trend of male eating disorders is growing.
