The role of the family in eating disorders

The proper treatment of eating disorders can take years of hard work, and to think that quick fixes are possible may be unrealistic. Communication is disrupted and tension can occur, but when families work together toward healing, the outcome can be positive. During this time, you will need expert help, so talk to a doctor or medical profession to get advice to cope with this treatment time.

The treatment of eating disorders takes typically years of hard work

When dealing with someone that has an eating disorder, you will want to remember:

  1. The best way to begin is to help your loved one recognize their problem. However confrontation can lead to denial and rebellion.

  2. You will need to be ready to be an unending source of optimism and energy. Those with eating disorders are used to protecting themselves from harm, so they will be defensive and difficult in the beginning of their treatment.
  3. Realize that they are in pain and that they deserve sympathy from you, even if they don’t seem to want it.

  4. Remember that the entire family is also dealing with the eating disorder.

  5. Teamwork between your medical team and family members is the best way to maintain a united and genuinely helpful front for your loved one.

Curing eating disorders can take a long time. Studies have shown that after five years, about half of eating disorder patients recover, though they will always have troubles in dealing with food issues. Remember to maintain your own life during this time as giving too much of yourself will not be any help when they really need you.
